The University of Ghana has been ranked fifth in Africa and retained its position as the leading university in Ghana and West Africa, according to the 2024 Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings.
Key achievements include placing fifth overall on the continent, behind four universities from Southern and Eastern Africa, and first in West Africa with an overall score of 74.3.
The university excelled in several performance pillars. It scored 79.7 in ethical leadership, highlighting its commitment to nurturing responsible leaders who prioritize integrity and social accountability. A score of 79.6 in student engagement reflects efforts to create an inclusive and stimulating academic environment. UG’s Africa impact score of 78.8 underscores its contributions to addressing critical challenges through innovative research and community engagement.
The institution’s focus on equitable access to education is evident in its score of 75.2 in access and fairness, showcasing its efforts to ensure opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. Despite financial challenges, UG recorded 61.3 in resources and finance, demonstrating effective resource management.
These achievements align with the university’s 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes transformative student experiences, impactful research, and sustainable resource mobilization. The student engagement score highlights the university’s dedication to academic enrichment, while the ethical leadership and resource management scores affirm its commitment to sustainable practices. The Africa impact score reflects UG’s vision of achieving global impact through innovative teaching, research, and community engagement.
This recognition highlights Ghana’s growing prominence in higher education. With an average score of 57 across 11 ranked institutions, Ghana emerged as the second-best-performing country in the region.
The rankings assess universities based on metrics such as access for marginalized groups, leadership development, and the preservation of African heritage. Ethical leadership, introduced as a pillar in 2024, emphasizes cultivating leadership skills and moral values in students, resonating with UG’s strategic objectives.
The advisory board for the rankings includes Sylvia Kunkyebe of the Mastercard Foundation, Juliet Thondhlana from the UNESCO Chair in International Education and Development, and Patrick Awuah, founder and president of Ashesi University. Their expertise ensured the rankings methodology remained regionally relevant and rigorous.
