Students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication–Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ) held a solemn candlelight vigil on Friday, January 23, in memory of their colleague, Nelson Blay Nokotey, who died after being knocked down on the N1 Highway.
Nokotey, a Level 300 Journalism student, was fatally hit by an unregistered vehicle near the Dzorwulu section of the highway, close to the university’s South Legon campus, on January 19, 2026, at about 4:00 pm while returning home.
The vigil, attended by students and university officials, also served as a renewed call for the construction of a pedestrian footbridge at the location, which students say has become a dangerous crossing point frequently used by members of the university community.
Speaking to Citi News on behalf of the students, Helen Porsoo appealed to the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, to urgently intervene by ensuring the provision of safety measures to prevent further loss of life on the highway.
The Dean of Students of UNIMAC-IJ urged students to remain calm while calling for justice for the deceased student.
“Our anger should be directed towards the driver who carelessly knocked down and killed Nelson, and we must pray that justice is served,” the Dean said.
