More than 700 Iranians have haphazardly died drinking toxic alcohol in the mistaken belief that moonshine or even industrial alcohol could see off coronavirus, Iranian officials have said.
The country has seen a wave of alcohol poisonings after false reports that strong alcohol could protect against the Covid-19 that has swept through the country.
Another 90-odd have also blinded themselves or damaged their vision after drinking drinks laced with toxic methanol.
Iran has faced the worst Covid-19 outbreak in the Middle East. Official figures put the number of cases at 91,500 and the number of deaths at 5,800 in the country, though the true toll is thought to be far higher
Social media rumours that alcohol could confer protection against the new coronavirus circulated wildly as it swept through Iran in February and March.
