Stray Bullets Injure Pregnant Woman, Teen Girl in Besiase

A 19-year-old pregnant woman is fighting for her life at the after being struck by stray bullets during a violent confrontation in .

The victim, , reportedly suffered severe gunshot wounds that resulted in the loss of her eight-month-old pregnancy.

The incident occurred on Thursday, March 12, at about 9 p.m., when a group of people were reportedly heading to bury a queen mother in the community.

Reports indicate that a confrontation broke out among some individuals, which escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

During the chaos, the pregnant woman was hit in the stomach by stray bullets.

A 14-year-old girl was also struck in the eye by a stray bullet during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the .

Medical staff are reportedly working to save the teenager’s eye.

Speaking to reporters, the Assembly Member for the Shiawu Besiase Electoral Area, , revealed that several other people also sustained machete injuries during the violence.

According to him, the incident may be linked to a long-standing land dispute between two chiefs in the area.

He also alleged that some individuals involved in the shooting were dressed in soldier camouflage with their faces covered.

“The bullets went through from the right and exited on the left. According to the doctor, the baby in her womb has died. The woman is also in a critical condition and is set to undergo surgery,” he said.

Authorities say the matter has been reported to the police as efforts are underway to restore calm in the community.
