Large quantities of illicit narcotic drugs, including high-dose tramadol popularly known as “Red” and marijuana, have been destroyed in the Ashanti Region as part of intensified efforts to combat drug abuse.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), supervised the destruction of the drugs at the Kaase Landfill Site.
The consignment comprised tramadol tablets in strengths ranging from 50 milligrams to 225 milligrams, with significant quantities of the 150-milligram variant. The drugs were seized through intelligence-led operations carried out over the past two years, according to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
Speaking ahead of the exercise, the Commanding Officer of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, ASP Fraizer Nutakor, said the destruction of the drugs forms part of the government’s sustained strategy to curb drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
He noted that the interventions have yielded positive results and reaffirmed the police administration’s commitment to clamping down on the sale and distribution of illegal drugs across the region.
