The Northern Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has destroyed narcotic drugs valued at GH¢2.5 million as part of efforts to enhance public safety and uphold justice in the region.
The destroyed substances included boxes of Tafrado 120mg, Tramaking, blisters of Tramadol, boxes of Royal 225mg, and quantities of marijuana. These items were narcotic exhibits previously kept at the Registry of the Circuit Court in Tamale.
The destruction followed a court order issued by His Honour Francis Ayamwuni Asobayire, a Circuit Court Judge, after the successful prosecution of individuals involved in trafficking the drugs.
The exercise was carried out at the Gbalahi Landfill site near Tamale and was witnessed by representatives from key state agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, as well as members of the media.
Northern Regional Commander of NACOC, Mr Issahaque Bakuri, said the action forms part of broader measures to curb drug smuggling and abuse in the country.
He explained that security officers have been deployed at various entry points across the region, with intensified surveillance at both approved and unapproved routes to address the growing drug menace.
Mr Bakuri also encouraged individuals struggling with drug addiction to seek counselling and rehabilitation services to support their recovery.
