A mobile money (MoMo) vendor operating at Torkoni/Blave in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region has reportedly died in an apparent suicide, an incident that has left residents of the area in shock.

The incident was reported around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The deceased, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed, was known to operate a mobile money business at the Hohoe main lorry station, where he also sold basic items including toothpaste, sponges and brushes.

According to the Assembly Member for the Torkoni/Blave Electoral Area, Derek Adzoe, information gathered indicates that the deceased was heard making several phone calls earlier in the day. The conversations reportedly suggested that an individual was demanding money from him, to which he responded that he would make payment through mobile money or electronic cash transfer.

Mr Adzoe said further accounts revealed that some individuals later went to the deceased’s residence, knocked on his door and allegedly threatened to report him to the police. A brother of the deceased reportedly noticed a change in his mood after the phone calls, although the issue was not discussed.

The brother later left the house for town and upon returning found the door locked. After repeated failed attempts to reach the deceased by phone, the door was forced open, and the vendor was found dead inside the room.
