Mahama orders expansion of security services recruitment to 40,000

John Dramani Mahama has directed a major expansion in recruitment across Ghana’s security services, increasing the intake target from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over the next four years.

The directive was issued after a high-level meeting with heads of the various security agencies, the Minister for the Interior Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Acting Minister for Defence Cassiel Ato Forson to review the ongoing recruitment process.

According to a statement released on Monday, March 16, the President was briefed on the progress of the recruitment exercise before instructing that the number of personnel to be enlisted into the services be significantly increased to strengthen the country’s security architecture.

President Mahama also stressed the importance of transparency and fairness in the recruitment process, urging the leadership of the security agencies to ensure that qualified applicants are given equal opportunities.

The meeting included key national security officials such as the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and the National Security Coordinator.

Also present were heads of the various security institutions, including the Inspector-General of the Ghana Police Service, Christian Tetteh Yohuno; the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie; the Director-General of the Ghana National Fire Service; the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Samuel Amadu; and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.

The expanded recruitment drive is expected to strengthen personnel capacity across the security services while creating additional employment opportunities for young people across the country.
