Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Suhuyini, has dismissed claims that the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport is politically motivated.
According to him, the proposed change from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport is intended to address historical and symbolic concerns rather than advance any partisan agenda.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Suhuyini explained that the name “Kotoka” remains a painful reminder of the 1966 military coup, which he said caused significant damage to Ghana’s democratic and developmental progress.
He urged Ghanaians to support the renaming initiative, describing it as a necessary step towards national rebranding and strengthening Ghana’s international identity.
Suhuyini noted that adopting the name Accra International Airport would make Ghana more easily identifiable on the global stage, especially for foreigners and international travellers.
“If it is Accra International Airport, there is nothing wrong with it. We need an airport that reflects our national identity. If you are outside the country and someone mentions Accra International Airport, you do not struggle to locate it,” he stated.
He further commended the government for addressing what he described as a long-standing historical issue and called on critics, particularly members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to approach the matter objectively.
“This is not about political undertones. Apart from the need to rebrand the country, there is also the realisation that the 1966 coup caused this country significant harm. To continue having that name on our main gateway is a constant reminder of the havoc it caused,” Suhuyini added.
