The Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while Mr Ayariga addressed journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament.
According to him, the proposed change forms part of broader efforts by the government to align the naming of public institutions with Ghana’s democratic values and evolving national identity.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” the Majority Leader stated, adding that the move would follow due process and be backed by legislation.
He explained that a bill would be presented to Parliament in accordance with established procedures, stressing that such decisions must be rooted in law and guided by the will of the people.
Kotoka International Airport, Ghana’s main international gateway, is one of the country’s most recognisable national landmarks. The facility currently bears the name of General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in Ghana’s 1966 coup d’état.
The proposed renaming is expected to spark widespread public debate due to the historical and political significance attached to the airport’s current name.
Parliament is anticipated to play a central role in the deliberations once the bill is formally introduced, with Members of Parliament expected to consider public sentiment, historical context, and national values in their discussions.
