A student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) has been stabbed amid disturbances linked to the ongoing Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival in Koforidua, raising serious security concerns and fears of reprisal attacks.
The victim, identified as Jerome Appiah, was allegedly attacked by some Form Two students of New Juaben Senior High School while eating waakye on his way back to campus. Reports indicate that he sustained a deep machete wound to the shoulder and bled profusely after the attack.
Police personnel from the Eastern Regional Command responded swiftly to the incident and rushed the injured student to the Eastern Regional Hospital. Hospital sources say he is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
Following the stabbing, the Headmaster of Koforidua SECTECH, Emmanuel Frimpong Benjabeng, together with some teachers, rushed to the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre, where the inter-schools sports festival was taking place, to avert possible retaliatory attacks by angry students.
At the time of the incident, Mr Benjabeng was attending a meeting with the New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, Mustapha Haruna Appiah. He reportedly left the meeting abruptly after receiving information that a teacher of SECTECH, Henry Kudiabor, had also been injured during the disturbances.
According to reports, the teacher sustained a head injury after being hit by a stone allegedly thrown by students of Nsutam Senior High Technical School, who were said to be pelting stones during clashes at the venue.
The New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, Mustapha Haruna Appiah, has condemned the violence and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. He has also urged the police and organisers of the sports festival to tighten security to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of students, teachers and spectators.
