A petition has been submitted to the Office of the President seeking the removal of Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), along with her deputies. The petitioner, Ofosu-Appiah Daniel, alleges constitutional violations, incompetence, bias, and misconduct that have eroded public trust in the electoral body.
The petition, submitted on Monday, January 27, 2025, invokes Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as the legal foundation for the request. In addition to Jean Mensa, the petitioner seeks the removal of Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy EC Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs; Samuel Tettey, Deputy EC Chairperson in charge of Operations; and Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Commission’s board.
According to the petition, the officials have engaged in actions and inactions that constitute gross misconduct, breaches of human rights, and incompetence in their official roles.
“By these actions and inactions, the Chairperson and her deputies have undermined the integrity of the Electoral Commission and breached their constitutional duties under Articles 42, 46, 23, and 296. Their continued stay in office poses a threat to the Ghanaian people in the electoral process,” a portion of the petition states.
The petitioner calls on the Office of the President to intervene, emphasizing that the alleged conduct of the EC leadership jeopardizes the credibility of Ghana’s democratic processes.
The Office of the President is yet to respond to the petition, which has sparked debate about the performance of the EC leadership and its role in safeguarding Ghana’s electoral integrity.
