The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reaffirmed that Senior High Schools (SHSs) will reopen on January 3, 2025, despite concerns raised by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) over unresolved financial challenges.
In a press release issued on January 2, 2025, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit at GES, stated, “SHS students are expected to report back to school on January 3rd, 2025, while primary and Junior High Schools will reopen on January 8th, 2025.”
CHASS had previously appealed to the government to delay the reopening, citing outstanding debts for food supplies and operational expenses. However, GES assured stakeholders that they are working closely with the Ministry of Education to resolve these issues.
“We are actively engaging the Ministry of Education to address these concerns,” Ms. Twum Ampofo added.
The GES urged students, parents, and teachers to adhere to the academic calendar and make necessary preparations. The decision to stick to the reopening schedule comes amid assurances that efforts are underway to tackle the financial challenges highlighted by CHASS.
This confirmation follows a December 31, 2024, request from CHASS to postpone the reopening, but GES maintains that the 2024/25 academic calendar remains unchanged.
