Edward Omane Boamah Appointed Minister-Designate for Defense

Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, a seasoned Ghanaian politician, medical practitioner, and former Minister for Communications, has been appointed Minister-Designate for Defense. His appointment is seen as a strategic move, given his extensive experience in governance and public service.

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Omane Boamah has held various key governmental roles over the years. From 2009 to 2012, he served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, where he chaired investigations into environmental incidents such as oil spills by KOSMOS Energy and Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. During his tenure, he initiated a nationwide tree-planting campaign to combat the effects of climate change.

He was later appointed Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports in 2012, a role he held until 2013. In this position, he contributed to youth development programs and oversaw preparations for major sports events.

In 2013, President John Dramani Mahama named him Minister for Communications. Omane Boamah’s tenure focused on digital safety and infrastructure development. He spearheaded initiatives such as the establishment of the National Computer Emergency Response Team and the National Committee on Child Online Protection. His efforts to protect children online and promote cybersecurity earned him recognition both locally and internationally.

Omane Boamah also served as Spokesperson to President Mahama from 2014 to 2017, representing the administration on various platforms and communicating key government policies.

Beyond politics, Edward Omane Boamah is a qualified medical doctor. He is an alumnus of the University of Ghana Medical School and holds a master’s degree in Health Policy Planning and Financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has contributed to public health initiatives, including volunteering for the WHO’s Expanded Programme on Immunization and participating in emergency medical rescue during Ghana’s May 9, 2001, stadium disaster.

Omane Boamah’s appointment as Minister-Designate for Defense is expected to leverage his administrative acumen and leadership experience to bolster Ghana’s defense strategy. The final confirmation of his role now awaits parliamentary approval.
