In line with his pledge to announce his cabinet within 14 days of assuming office, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, as the Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs.
The appointment of Mr. Ablakwa underscores his significant contributions to Ghana’s political landscape and his growing influence within the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The 44-year-old politician has served in various capacities, including Deputy Minister for Information from 2009 to 2013 and Deputy Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017. Currently, he is the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and a member of the Appointments Committee.
Ablakwa, who hails from Aveyime-Battor in the Volta Region, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. With academic qualifications that include a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Ghana, a Master of Arts in Communication Media and Public Relations from the University of Leicester, and a certificate in Leadership from Harvard Kennedy School, his appointment is expected to enhance Ghana’s foreign policy agenda.
In addition to this new appointment, Mr. Ablakwa recently chaired the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) team, tasked with investigating allegations of corruption by the previous government. His leadership in this role highlights his commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.
Speaking about the appointment, political analysts have lauded President Mahama’s choice, citing Ablakwa’s diplomatic acumen and dedication to public service as assets that will strengthen Ghana’s position on the global stage.
Ablakwa, who has represented the North Tongu Constituency since 2009, has consistently demonstrated a strong connection to his constituents. He has won multiple elections with overwhelming support, including a remarkable 93.11% victory in the 2024 general elections.
