Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Member of Parliament for the Juaboso Constituency in the Western North Region, has been appointed Minister-Designate for Health by former President John Dramani Mahama on January 21, 2025. If confirmed, Akandoh will lead Ghana’s health sector for the next four years, a critical role in ensuring healthcare delivery and policy advancement in the country.
A seasoned politician and dedicated public servant, Akandoh has been a member of Ghana’s Parliament since January 7, 2013, representing the Juaboso Constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Born on June 19, 1980, in Sefwi Antobia, Akandoh pursued higher education at the University of Cape Coast, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics and Mathematics in 2007. He later obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Mountcrest University College and a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Natural Resources Law from the University of Ghana.
Before entering politics, Akandoh served as the assistant director in charge of the National Voluntary Programme of the National Service Scheme at its head office in Accra. His commitment to community service and governance led him to run for parliamentary office.
Since his election to Parliament in 2013, Akandoh has been re-elected consistently, showcasing his popularity and dedication to his constituents. He won the Juaboso seat in the 2016 elections with 51.91% of the votes and increased his margin in the 2020 elections with 53.10%.
During his tenure in Parliament, he has championed health-related initiatives and advocated for improved healthcare services in his constituency and beyond. His appointment as Minister-Designate for Health reflects his deep understanding of the health challenges facing Ghana and his ability to implement policies to address them.
Akandoh is married and a father of five. A devout Christian, he worships with the Anglican Church.
In July 2023, Akandoh survived a road accident on the Nyinahin-Kumasi road in the Ashanti Region when his car collided with a Sprinter bus. His recovery and return to active politics demonstrated his resilience and commitment to public service.
As Minister-Designate for Health, Akandoh will oversee Ghana’s healthcare system, addressing pressing challenges such as improving healthcare infrastructure, access to quality care, and responding to public health emergencies. His leadership will be instrumental in shaping the future of Ghana’s health sector.
