A Basic 5 pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School Block “A” in Damongo is receiving treatment at the Damongo St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital after allegedly being severely beaten by his class teacher.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, January 20, when the teacher, identified as Mr. Fatawu, marked a homework exercise. According to the pupil’s father, Abdul Wahidu Mahama, the child scored 2 out of 8 and was ordered, along with some classmates, to lie on classroom desks.

The teacher is alleged to have flogged the pupils with a wire cane, hitting them on their backs and other parts of their bodies. Mr. Mahama said his son attempted to shield himself with his hand but was beaten repeatedly and verbally abused for his poor academic performance.

The following day, the child complained of intense pain in his hand. After home treatment failed, he was taken to Damongo St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital, where he was admitted. Doctors later performed surgery on Tuesday, January 27.

According to the father, the teacher has not visited the child since the incident. He said the teacher’s last visit to the family home was on Sunday, January 25, after the child’s mother reached out. However, the school headmistress and another staff member have visited the hospital to check on the pupil.

Mr. Mahama is calling on the Ghana Education Service, the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter and ensure justice.
