COP29: Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Urges Unified Action Against Climate Change’s Escalating Threats

At the ongoing COP29 Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, Ghana’s Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, stressed the critical need for coordinated global action on climate change. Addressing journalists, she highlighted climate change’s extensive effects and urged ongoing dialogue rather than reactive responses to disasters.

“Climate change is something that affects us all in many ways,” Owusu-Ekuful stated. “By consistently speaking about it, we can help prevent more severe impacts.” She detailed Ghana’s proactive steps to address climate issues, emphasizing cross-sector collaboration and adaptation strategies. For instance, she noted that altered rainfall patterns had disrupted planting schedules for farmers this season, as guidance from the Ghana Meteorological Agency on timing adjustments arrived too late.

Coastal erosion and rising sea levels also threaten Ghana’s coastal communities, highlighting the need for preparedness and education. Owusu-Ekuful called on all government agencies to develop a comprehensive climate resilience plan, urging lifestyle changes and stricter enforcement of environmental laws as essential measures.

She warned that unchecked climate change could significantly impact the global economy, likening it to the economic effects of the pandemic. “Worsening climate impacts will put inflation on steroids unless every country can take bold action,” she stated. She called for prioritizing climate finance as a form of “global inflation insurance” to mitigate the escalating costs of inaction.

In her call for immediate, unified action, Owusu-Ekuful stressed that only through collective efforts can the world avert a worsening climate crisis.
