The Central Reg6ional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate suspension of all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) following recent violent incidents during competitions.

In a statement dated Sunday, February 22, 2026, the Directorate said the decision was taken after receiving credible reports of clashes among students during zonal athletics events.

The directive comes in the wake of a violent confrontation in Agona Swedru involving students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

Videos circulating on social media captured the alleged assault of an Obrachire SHTS student by some SWESBUS students during the district inter-schools athletics competition held on Thursday, February 19.

According to eyewitnesses, what began as a rivalry during the sporting event escalated into physical clashes, resulting in the brutal attack.

In its letter, the Directorate expressed deep concern over the incidents, stating that they had disrupted the spirit of healthy competition and posed serious threats to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and spectators.

“These unfortunate occurrences have not only disrupted the spirit of healthy competition but have also posed serious threats to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and spectators,” the statement noted.

GES reminded heads of schools that sporting activities are intended to promote discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy rivalry, adding that such objectives had been undermined by acts of indiscipline and violence.

To safeguard lives and maintain order, Management has directed the immediate cessation of all zonal inter-school sporting activities until further notice.

The temporary suspension will allow the Directorate to conduct a thorough review, engage relevant stakeholders, and develop preventive strategies to avert a recurrence.

Heads of SHSs and SHTSs have been instructed to suspend all planned or scheduled zonal athletics competitions, inform staff and students, and ensure strict compliance.

The Directorate emphasised that the directive takes immediate effect and must be adhered to without exception, while reaffirming its commitment to restoring sporting activities under conditions that guarantee safety and discipline.
