The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has shut down six private vehicle testing centres for issuing roadworthiness certificates without conducting proper inspections.
According to DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey, the affected Private Vehicle Testing Stations failed to carry out their core responsibility but still issued reports declaring vehicles roadworthy.
He made the disclosure during the commissioning of three new vehicle inspection centres in Accra, stressing that such practices undermine road safety and often lead to misplaced criticism of the DVLA.
Kotey explained that the Authority relies on reports from these private centres to determine whether vehicles meet safety standards, making it critical for them to operate with integrity.
He called for collective vigilance, urging the public and stakeholders to monitor the activities of testing centres to ensure compliance.
The DVLA boss noted that the closures, carried out over the past three months, form part of efforts to sanitise the vehicle inspection system and improve road safety across the country.
