Ghana has received a significant fuel supply boost with the arrival of a vessel carrying 450,000 barrels of light crude oil, aimed at sustaining the country’s thermal power generation.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, who confirmed that the fuel discharge process had already begun. The delivery comes days after he informed Parliament that the country had only 2.6 days of fuel reserves left.

Speaking on Citi FM, Mr. Jinapor clarified that the fuel had been ordered over a month ago, and its arrival aligns with planned efforts to stabilize energy supply.

“There’s no cause for alarm. We’re managing the power system properly,” he assured, emphasizing that his earlier statement was intended for Parliament’s Committee on Mines and Energy, not to create public panic.

The Minister also revealed that in addition to the light crude oil, his ministry had secured heavy fuel oil and diesel to further strengthen power generation. He credited proactive fuel procurement and management strategies for eliminating load-shedding and reducing the power deficit, which stood at 780 megawatts when the current administration assumed office.

Mr. Jinapor further disclosed that negotiations had prevented a planned shutdown by independent power producer Karpower, describing the resolution as a demonstration of effective leadership.
