Okada Rider Granted GH₵50,000 Bail Over Alleged Robbery Attempt

A 21-year-old commercial motorbike rider, Hope Nunekpeku, has been granted bail of GH₵50,000 with two sureties by the Amasaman Circuit Court following charges of an attempted robbery and preparation to commit a crime. Nunekpeku, who pleaded not guilty to both charges, is expected to reappear in court on January 6, 2025.

The court, presided over by Ms. Anid Marful-Sau, heard that Nunekpeku’s alleged accomplice, identified only as Dickson, is currently at large.

According to Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru, the incident occurred on December 4, 2023, at Shikpontele in the Greater Accra Region. The complainant, a driver residing at Opah, had parked his Sprinter Benz bus by the roadside to deliver money and provisions to his wife.

While unloading the items, the complainant noticed two men on a motorbike approaching his vehicle. Their suspicious behavior prompted him to question them. The motorbike then parked in front of his vehicle, but as his wife joined him inside, the complainant observed Nunekpeku, the pillion rider, removing an object from his clothing.

Sensing danger, the complainant moved his vehicle toward them, causing the motorbike to speed off into the darkness.

The complainant alerted a police motorbike patrol team, who pursued and arrested Nunekpeku. A machete hidden in his T-shirt was recovered during the arrest. The complainant identified Nunekpeku as the pillion rider, while Dickson managed to escape on the motorbike.

During questioning, Nunekpeku confirmed Dickson as his accomplice but failed to assist the police in locating him. Following investigations, Nunekpeku was charged with the offenses.
