The Cape Coast Circuit Court has sentenced two men to 80 years in prison for robbing and killing an Okada rider with intentions of using his body parts for money rituals. The suspects, Francis Mawunya, 22, and his friend, Benjamin Acquah, were each given a 40-year sentence for the robbery, and they are set to reappear in court on November 28, 2024, to face additional charges related to the murder.
According to reports, the incident took place on July 14, 2022, when the two men hired 18-year-old Okada rider Kwame Ogyam to transport them from Awutu Bontrase to Awutu Mfadwen. They robbed Ogyam of his motorcycle and murdered him, removing his body parts for ritual purposes, hoping to gain wealth in time for the 2022 Awutu Awubia Festival.
Following the sentencing, Ogyam’s father, Kwame Darko, expressed relief and called on parents to better guide their children. The family also commended law enforcement and the judiciary for ensuring justice in the case.
