Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike starting October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to tackle illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
At an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, October 10, the labour unions expressed their frustration over the lack of decisive government action against illegal mining, which they argue is harming the environment and livelihoods across Ghana. The unions had previously set a deadline, demanding action by the end of September.
Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), stated, “Following the expiration of our deadline and the government’s failure to meet our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024.”
He urged all workers to stay home starting Thursday, October 10, to pressure the government into taking immediate steps to combat the galamsey menace.
