The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is organizing a protest today, September 17, to voice its dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the 2024 voters register.
The NDC leadership instructed all regional offices to take part in the demonstrations following claims of irregularities in the provisional voters register provided by the EC. According to the NDC, the register contains significant discrepancies, including inflated voter counts in certain polling stations. The party alleges that these issues are part of an attempt by the EC to manipulate the upcoming December 7 elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the party’s chairman, called for the nationwide protests during a campaign event. The NDC is also pushing for a detailed forensic examination of the voters register to ensure the integrity of the forthcoming elections.
The Ghana Police Service, in a press briefing on September 16, assured citizens that it is well-prepared to maintain order throughout the demonstrations. Mustapha Gbande, NDC’s Deputy General Secretary, emphasized on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News that the party is fully organized for the protest and warned that any protester causing disruptions will face consequences.
Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Director, reiterated on the Citi Breakfast Show that the EC should have no objections to a forensic audit of the register if there is nothing to conceal.
In response, the EC stated that there is no need for an audit, as the concerns raised by the NDC are typical and will be addressed before the elections.
