Mahama’s Tenure was Better than What we are seeing now – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, lauded the achievements of the ex-President during his administration.

In a discussion with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV’s Face to Face, Kwakye Ofosu highlighted the significant infrastructural advancements made during Mahama’s time in office, contrasting them with the current administration’s seven-year record.

Comparing Mahama’s leadership with that of President Akufo-Addo, Kwakye Ofosu argued that conditions were markedly better under the former President than what Ghanaians are experiencing today. He claimed that Mahama outperformed the current NPP government across all performance metrics.

“Our national debt was under control, the economy wasn’t bankrupt, and other indicators were far better than they are now. By the end of 2016, when Mahama left office, the country was in a much better condition.

“If you examine all sectors of the economy, Mahama made substantial investments to ensure Ghanaian children had access to education. In health, people still credit him for our ability to manage COVID-19. Without his extensive health infrastructure investments, we wouldn’t have been able to handle the pandemic.

“We had longstanding power issues for decades, experiencing outages in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s under former President J.A. Kufuor. Mahama took bold steps and invested heavily to address this, making generation capacity a non-issue for power outages.

“In the communication sector, water, and ICT space, by the time Mahama left office, 76% of Ghanaians had access to potable water, a figure that has since declined. This government has failed to replicate such investments. In nearly every sector, conditions were better under Mahama’s administration than today.”

He also pointed out Mahama’s swift action in dismissing appointees accused of corruption, contrasting it with President Akufo-Addo’s protection of his corrupt officials.

“Mahama’s worst performance in the corruption perception index is better than the best performance of this government. He was proactive in addressing corruption allegations. For instance, despite Abuga Pele’s close ties with Mahama, he did not hesitate to take legal action against him when graft allegations emerged.

“He acted swiftly in the Victoria Hammah case, firing her immediately, unlike the current administration. President Akufo-Addo has consistently shielded corrupt appointees, hindering anti-corruption efforts. He prejudges investigation outcomes and refuses to punish those involved in corruption. There’s no comparison between the NPP and Mahama’s administration. Mahama outperformed the NPP on every significant indicator.”
