Minister of Youth and Sports Calls for Enhanced Maintenance of Culture of Sporting Facilities After African Games

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, has emphasized the need for a more effective approach to maintaining sports facilities in the country. Speaking at the unveiling of the University of Ghana’s sports facilities on Friday, March 1st, 2024, he highlighted that the construction of modern sports facilities not only fosters athletic excellence but also contributes to overall infrastructure development, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

Hon. Ussif noted that post-Accra 2023, these facilities will serve as centers of excellence for nurturing young talents and hosting international competitions. Stressing the importance of regular maintenance to uphold international standards and ensure continuous development of athletes, he urged stakeholders to prioritize the upkeep of these facilities.

The Minister emphasized the significance of the upcoming 13th African Games for Ghana’s national development, stating that beyond the excitement of the competition, the event serves as a driver for progress, growth, and development. He highlighted that the substantial investment in these sporting facilities aims not only at sports development but also at utilizing sports for socio-economic development.

Hon. Ussif also emphasized the promotion of healthy lifestyles and well-being among citizens of all ages through sports. Reflecting on the preparations for the African Games, he commended the efforts made despite challenges, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to providing swift and suitable solutions.

He called on all stakeholders to contribute to the success of the Games, emphasizing Ghana’s reputation for hospitality and urging everyone to ensure that the event is not only memorable but also truly unforgettable for all participants.

Furthermore, he appealed to corporate entities, including multinational companies, to seize the opportunity to become sponsors, leveraging the national and continental platforms to reach millions of Ghanaian and African audiences.

The 13th African Games, which will host over 13,000 elite athletes, sports technocrats, technicians, officials, and volunteers, is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, March 23rd, 2024.
