Ghana Considering Visa Waivers for African Nations – Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has revealed the country’s contemplation of visa waivers for fellow African nations. Inspired by Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa’s recent decisions to permit visa-free travel for Africans, Botchwey expressed Ghana’s earnest consideration, stating, “we are seriously thinking about” joining the visa-free initiative.

In an interview with Citi News, the minister shared that the government is actively exploring this prospect, collaborating with the Ministries of Interior and Tourism to draft a visa waiver agreement. Emphasizing Ghana’s desire to become a “pilgrimage country,” Botchwey aims to attract individuals of African descent to connect with their roots.

Additionally, Ghana and South Africa have already inked a visa waiver agreement, effective from November 1, 2023. This pact facilitates unrestricted travel for citizens of both nations, fostering a 90-day stay within a calendar year for business and tourism purposes.

The agreement is anticipated to enhance trade and tourism, symbolizing the strengthening relationship between Ghana and South Africa. Stay tuned for an imminent decision from the Ghanaian government on broader visa waivers for the continent.
