The Centre for Advancing Rural Opportunity (CARO) Ghana, a non-profit organization located in the Upper West Region, is urging the Ghanaian government to bolster its investment and allocate more resources to enhance Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) systems at the district and community levels. In addition to this call for greater investment, CARO Ghana is advocating for coordinated efforts aimed at achieving universal hand hygiene.
Mr. Freeman Kanton, the Director of CARO Ghana, made this appeal during a day-long hand hygiene awareness event, jointly organized by his organization and the Environmental Health Department of the Lawra Municipal Assembly, to commemorate the 2023 Global Hand Washing Day at the Kuoli Primary and Junior High School Park in Lawra.
Mr. Kanton emphasized the significance of continuing the practice of hand washing with soap on a regular basis. He stated, “Many germs, which can cause illness, are transmitted when we neglect proper hand washing with soap and clean, running water. Therefore, it is vital for us to consistently wash our hands, particularly at key moments like after using the restroom, food preparation, before meals, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing one’s nose.”
In addition to the hand hygiene awareness event, CARO Ghana, in partnership with the Environmental Health Department of the Lawra Municipal Assembly, is conducting a radio discussion and a quiz competition on Hand Hygiene to mark this year’s Global Hand Washing Day in the Upper West Region.
Furthermore, CARO Ghana has generously donated hand washing materials, including Veronica buckets, and a variety of items such as soap and books to support the local school in their efforts to promote hand hygiene and cleanliness.
