The Eastern Regional Head of Education at the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Worlanyo Wazila, has sounded a grave alarm regarding the escalating crisis of drug addiction among the youth in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Wazila, who heads the education efforts of NACOC in the region, emphasized that this troubling trend carries with it severe and potentially irreversible consequences.
One of the key factors contributing to this surge in drug addiction, according to Wazila, is the prevalence of mental health issues among the youth. Mental health challenges can render young individuals more vulnerable to seeking solace in substance abuse. Additionally, peer influence has played a significant role in exacerbating the problem, particularly in the Eastern Region.
Wazila’s warning came during a stakeholder meeting convened in Koforidua, the regional capital. He revealed that although comprehensive data on the extent of the issue is still being compiled, preliminary findings are deeply concerning. The alarming aspect is the brazenness with which young people in the region are engaging in drug abuse, including the use of illegal substances, largely influenced by their peers.
Highlighting the urgent need to address this crisis, Wazila pointed out the potential hazards posed by individuals grappling with drug addiction. These risks extend beyond personal harm and include the potential for accidents, especially when those under the influence operate vehicles. Consequently, he stressed that this matter demands immediate attention and intervention.
The stakeholder meeting was orchestrated by BEST NACEM Foundation in collaboration with the Legal Aid Commission and the Attorney General’s Department. The event drew participation from representatives of various organizations, including the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Prison Service, and traditional authorities.
The central theme of the gathering revolved around ‘The Use of Illicit Drugs and Its Consequences: The Role of Stakeholders in Educating the Youth.’ The objective was to foster collaborative efforts among stakeholders to devise sustainable solutions for curbing drug addiction rates among the youth within their respective spheres of influence.
Stephen Nana Afful, the CEO of BEST NACEM Foundation, outlined the organization’s dual focus on reducing prison overcrowding and combating drug abuse among young individuals. With the recent legalization of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes, marked by the Commission Bill of 2019, the emphasis has shifted towards treating drug addiction as a public health issue rather than criminalizing addicts. This new legal framework prioritizes rehabilitation and support for those struggling with addiction.
