Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government will allocate GH¢150 million to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in 2026 to strengthen efforts against illegal mining and forest degradation.
Presenting the 2026 Budget Statement to Parliament on Thursday, November 13, under the theme “Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation,” Dr. Forson said the allocation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural environment and restoring degraded lands.
“An amount of GH¢150 million has been allocated to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) for their activities against illegal mining and forest degradation,” he stated.
The Finance Minister explained that the funds will support enforcement, intelligence, and monitoring operations led by NAIMOS to clamp down on galamsey, which has severely affected water bodies, forest reserves, and farmlands.
NAIMOS coordinates national efforts against illegal mining by integrating the work of security agencies, regulatory bodies, and local authorities. Its operations are intelligence-driven and involve collaboration with mining communities to promote responsible mining practices and ensure environmental sustainability.
Dr. Forson reaffirmed that the government remains committed to combating environmental crimes that threaten livelihoods and national development, emphasizing that protecting Ghana’s natural resources is central to long-term economic transformation.
