Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reminded ex-president John Dramani Mahama that economy he was in charge of was so weak that it couldn’t even alleviate an internally problem like ‘dumsor’.
Last week, the ex- President claimed the economy under the leadership of the current President is weak and has been exposed in just a month after the novel Coronavirus pandemic invaded the country and all over the world.
Vice President Bawumia, addressing journalists at the Jubilee House was surprised at how a former president whose administration could not handle Dumsor for four year would make comparisons with a global pandemic like the Coronavirus.
“If you want to test the robustness of an economy, you test it in the times of crisis. Thankfully, we have had two crises. Under the NDC, it was an internally- generated crises which was dumsor. Under the Presidency of Nana Akuffo-Addo, there has been an externally generated crises which has been the global Coronavirus pandemic”.
“I just want you to ask yourself, how have these crises been managed? The Dumsor crises which crippled this economy for four years. What were the motivating measures offered to businesses and individuals during the Dumsor, an internally generated crisis?” The Vice President asked.
“We saw that even during Dumsor electricity prices were being increased, fuel prices were increased, teacher trainee allowances were being cancelled, nursing trainee training allowances were being cancelled. All of that was happening during this crises.”
“You look at the Coronavirus crises and you look at the difference in terms of what happened. The president has reduced electricity prices and has made it free for lifeline consumers. He has given free water to all Ghanaians for three months, has made sure there is a stimulus package of 600 million Ghana cedis for and we have seen domestic production of PPE’s (Personal Protective Equipments)for our health workers locally”.
Having disclosed the differences between the weak economy under John Mahama which he pointed out couldn’t alleviate the suffering of Ghanaians and businesses for four years and the robust economy under Akuffo Addo which he said has taken measures which lessens the problems of Ghanaians irrespective of the negative impact of the Coronavirus on the economy.
“So the difference couldn’t be more stark between the leadership under a crisis under Dumsor and that under the Coronavirus epidemic. So I ask a simple question, who will you trust in times of crises.”
“The answer, I will say is very clear. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has shown leadership and concern for ordinary Ghanaians”. He stated emphatically.
