The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized what it describes as a politically motivated move by President John Dramani Mahama to stifle the New Patriotic Party (NPP) through the arrest and detention of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Wontumi remains in custody after failing to meet the GHS50 million bail set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His detention has sparked protests, with Minority Members of Parliament gathering at EOCO’s Accra office on Thursday, May 29, to demand his release.
Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, addressing party supporters, accused President Mahama of masterminding an “evil plot” to destabilize the NPP ahead of the 2024 elections.
“Our stronghold is the Ashanti Region, and now they want to arrest our Chairman and hide him. Their only aim is to frighten us, but they cannot intimidate our party,” Annoh-Dompreh declared.
He questioned the unusual bail conditions imposed on Wontumi and accused EOCO of being used as a tool to target NPP members. “We’ve never seen bail terms like this. This is just one of many attempts to frustrate us,” he said.
The Chief Whip also recalled that when the NDC was in opposition, the NPP did not use such tactics against them.
“We never treated them this way when they were in opposition. Ghana is a democracy, and we expect fairness. We’ll keep the public updated after further consultations in Parliament,” Annoh-Dompreh concluded.
