President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Cabinet is currently deliberating on reforms to Ghana’s TV licence regime, with plans to submit proposed amendments to Parliament in the coming months.
The President made this known on Thursday, January 8, 2026, during a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as part of his engagements with key state institutions.
According to President Mahama, the government is considering replacing the existing TV licence with a Public Media Levy aimed at strengthening and stabilising funding for public broadcasting institutions.
He explained that the proposed levy would broaden the revenue base for public media, making funding more sustainable and reducing operational challenges faced by state-owned broadcasters.
“There are a few suggestions we have with regard to the so-called TV licence, and our thinking is moving in the direction of amending that law to make it a public media levy of some sort,” the President stated.
President Mahama added that once Cabinet concludes discussions on the proposed reforms, the government will engage stakeholders, including GBC, before formally presenting the amendments to Parliament.
“When we are ready, we will discuss our thinking at Cabinet, but we will also engage you before we finally go to Parliament to amend the law,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the proposed changes would significantly improve funding for public media organisations, enabling them to operate more efficiently and effectively carry out their public service mandate.
“I am confident that with some of the proposals we have received, public media institutions will be able to raise more funds and perform their work much better,” the President added.
