The University of Ghana’s iconic night market has undergone a significant transformation to address flooding issues and provide better facilities for vendors, students, and staff. The refurbished market, located on the university campus, was officially commissioned by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, sparking joy and excitement among attendees.
The revamped facility now boasts 80 cubicles, including 36 food stalls, 20 fruit and vegetable stalls, and 24 additional shops. These upgrades aim to not only improve the overall appearance of the market but also to enhance the shopping experience for visitors.
One of the key highlights of the renovation is the implementation of measures to mitigate flooding, a longstanding issue that has plagued the market during rainy seasons. The new design includes improved drainage systems and elevation of certain areas to prevent waterlogging, ensuring a more comfortable and safe environment for vendors and shoppers alike.
In addition to the structural improvements, the upgraded market also features new washrooms, adding to the convenience and hygiene standards of the facility. This development is expected to attract more visitors to the market and boost economic activities in the surrounding community.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed her delight at the transformation of the market, emphasizing the university’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for both academic and social activities. She commended the efforts of all stakeholders involved in the project and encouraged everyone to take pride in the new and improved night market.
The refurbished University of Ghana night market is now open to the public, offering a wide variety of food, fruits, vegetables, and other goods in a modern and flood-free setting.
