The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has issued a stern warning of a nationwide strike if the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) fails to act on directives from the National Labour Commission (NLC) concerning members’ salaries and allowances.
The Association revealed that on June 9, 2025, the NLC directed GTEC to reinstate withdrawn or reduced allowances of GAUA members, open dialogue on existing disparities in the Single Spine Salary Structure, and reverse a directive regarding office-holding arrangements.
However, GAUA says there has been no concrete effort to implement these directives, and it is giving the government until the end of June to comply or face industrial action.
In a related development, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has also served a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC. The union is demanding the immediate reversal of a directive compelling traditional public universities to swear in representatives of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) onto their Governing Councils.
As tensions rise, both unions are calling on GTEC and relevant stakeholders to urgently resolve the issues to avoid disruptions to academic and administrative activities in the country’s tertiary institutions.
