President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the construction of a 10,000-bed student hostel at the University of Ghana, describing the project as a major intervention to address accommodation challenges and improve student safety.

The President made the announcement at the opening ceremony of the University of Ghana’s 77th Annual New Year School and Conference on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

According to him, the hostel project is the outcome of an agreement signed during his recent visit to Singapore and will be delivered using prefabricated building technology.

“When I went to Singapore, we signed an agreement for a 10,000-student hostel in the University of Ghana. This is going to be a prefabricated building, meaning the structure will be manufactured elsewhere and assembled on campus,” President Mahama said.

He revealed that preparations for the project are already underway, with machinery for the factory producing the hostel components shipped from Singapore and currently on its way to Accra.

President Mahama linked the project to growing public concern over student accommodation, noting that unlike previous decades when students could easily secure on-campus rooms, many students today are forced to live off campus and commute daily.

He stressed that the accommodation shortage has become a serious safety concern, citing incidents where students travelling to and from off-campus residences have been involved in fatal road accidents or attacked by armed robbers.

“There have been unfortunate cases where students have been knocked down by vehicles or attacked by armed robbers and lost their lives. It is preferable that more students live on campus or as close to campus as possible,” he stated.

The President said the hostel project aligns with broader government efforts to improve access to education and enhance student welfare across public universities.

The 77th Annual New Year School and Conference is being held under the theme “Building the Ghana We Want, Together for Sustainable Development,” bringing together policymakers, academics, civil society actors and students to discuss national development priorities.
