A suspected gunman has been arrested and a cache of weapons and ammunition seized following a cordon and search operation by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Monday, April 21, 2025, is part of intensified security efforts aimed at restoring calm in Bawku and nearby areas, which have experienced frequent clashes and intermittent gunfire.
According to a statement from the GAF, signed by Brigadier General Eric Aggrey-Quarshie, Director General of Public Relations, troops in Binduri responded after hearing sporadic gunshots from the Binduri Central Market area and quickly cordoned off the location.
A joint team consisting of personnel from the 11 Mechanised Battalion, the Joint Task Force, and the Police conducted a comprehensive search.
One suspected gunman was apprehended and handed over to the Police.
The security team also recovered the following items:
One empty M16 rifle magazine
An AK-47 rifle
A G3 rifle
370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition
128 rounds of G3 ammunition
A machete
Four fragmentation jackets
A pair of boots
One helmet
Later that day, unidentified gunmen attempted to infiltrate Binduri but were intercepted by military patrols. An exchange of gunfire ensued, forcing the assailants to flee.
The GAF noted that the situation is now under control, with troops maintaining high alertness to respond to any future threats.
“The GAF, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains committed to safeguarding the peace and security of Bawku and urges residents and the general public to support efforts to restore normalcy,” the statement concluded.
