Three major unions in Ghana’s tertiary education sector, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), have jointly threatened a nationwide strike if government fails to release their book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, June 9, the unions expressed growing frustration over what they termed an “undue delay” in the release of the approved exchange rate needed to compute their statutory allowances.
The unions stated that the delay is causing “significant uncertainty and frustration” among their members, who rely heavily on the allowance to support teaching, research, and academic development.
Following a joint meeting on June 8, the unions resolved that while they are willing to accept a delay in the release of the exchange rate, any payment beyond September 2025 will not be tolerated.
They emphasized that the book and research allowance is a statutory right under their Conditions of Service and not a favor from government.
The unions have warned that failure to meet the June 13 deadline will serve as an official notice of industrial action, potentially disrupting academic activities across all affected institutions.
They called on the government to act swiftly to protect the academic calendar and safeguard the welfare of lecturers and the broader education system.
