U/E: 66 Illegal Miners Arrested in Joint Military-Police Operation at Tilli Forest

A total of 66 illegal miners (galamseyers) have been arrested in a joint military and police operation at the Tilli Forest Reserve in the Upper East Region.

The swoop, which took place on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, aimed to halt illegal mining activities that are destroying the forest ecosystem.

The arrested suspects include:

  • 38 Ghanaians
  • 26 Togolese
  • 2 Burkinabés

The Tilli Forest Reserve is one of the largest in the Upper East Region, home to wildlife species such as elephants and other organisms that depend on the ecosystem. However, illegal mining activities are threatening its survival.

Following the arrests, Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga revealed that the operation was initiated after a call from the Paramount Chief of Sakote, who urged authorities to curb illegal mining in the area.

Authorities are expected to take further actions to protect the forest and prevent future encroachments.
