Two Jubilee House soldiers, GIS officer remanded for alleged robbery

Six individuals, including four military personnel, an Immigration Officer, and a private security personnel, have been remanded into police custody by the Koforidua Circuit Court B. The accused individuals, identified as Sergeant Mensah Dominic, L/Cpl Tetteh Wayo, L/CPL Nyarko Bernard, PTE Eric Anim, L.C.O Richard Okyere, and Kelvin Marfo, were charged in connection with an armed robbery incident at Akyem Akanteng in the Lower West Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region.

According to the prosecution, the accused coordinated their actions, with the immigration officer, Richard Okyere, using a Mitsubishi L200 to transport the two military officers from Jubilee House and subsequently picking up two more military men before heading to the location of the alleged robbery.

In the early hours of November 11, 2023, the suspects, armed with military rifles and dressed in military attire, reportedly invaded the home of a 55-year-old Cocoa purchasing clerk, demanding GH¢100,000.00 under threats of violence. The victim, unable to meet the demand, offered them 10,000 cash and a 5-gram gold ore valued at GH¢29,000, which the suspects took before fleeing the scene.

However, their luck ran out as the complainant alerted the authorities immediately. The suspects were intercepted by the police at an Osenase checkpoint. Upon apprehension, two military rifles, ammunition, magazines, and a helmet were confiscated by the authorities.

During interrogations, the first accused person allegedly handed over the 5 pounds of gold ore, previously reported stolen, to the District Commander.

The case, now under the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (RCID) in Kibi, has led to the impounding of the Mitsubishi L200 used in the alleged crime.

Following Assistant State Attorney Micdad Iddrisu’s request for remand to allow further investigations, the court, presided over by Matilda Ribeiro, remanded the suspects on two counts: conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. They are set to reappear before the court on November 28th, 2023.

The Mitsubishi L200, a key piece of evidence, remains impounded at the Eastern South Regional Headquarters for further examination and potential action in connection with the case.
