A violent clash between Chinese nationals and local youth from Sekyere Krobo in the Ashanti Region on Friday, October 11, 2024, has resulted in two people being shot and injured. The incident occurred at an illegal mining, or “galamsey,” site, raising tensions over the presence of foreign nationals in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.
Eyewitnesses report that the conflict began when the Chinese operators allegedly refused demands from the youth to halt their mining activities.
The confrontation quickly escalated, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
