A commercial driver in Accra has gone viral after returning passengers to the Circle Station for refusing to pay the old transport fare, despite a government directive reducing fares by 15%.

On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) officially announced a nationwide reduction in transport fares following a decline in fuel prices and an appreciating cedi. However, compliance has been inconsistent.

A young woman shared her frustrating experience on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that the driver returned to the station mid-journey when passengers insisted on paying the newly reduced fare.

“I’m at Circle right now. The car was loaded and came back to the station because we refused to pay the actual amount he asked. The government said 15% reduction, but he says he won’t accept it,” she said in the video.

The scene captured heated exchanges between some of the stranded passengers and the driver, who remained adamant in defying the GPRTU directive.
