A wave of sorrow has swept through the Edwenase community in the Ashanti Region following the suspected suicide of a 37-year-old nurse at the Kokofu Government Hospital.

The nurse, identified as Akosua Adutwuwaa, was found dead in her room on the morning of Sunday, July 20, under tragic circumstances. According to her mother, Akosua had followed her usual routine that morning—rising early, handling household chores, and preparing porridge for her two-year-old daughter. Nothing in her demeanor suggested distress or anxiety.

As the family was preparing for church between 7 and 8 a.m., they realized Akosua was missing. A frantic search led to the discovery of her lifeless body in one of the rooms of the house. She had allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan using a white rope.

The incident has shocked residents of Edwenase, many of whom described the late nurse as quiet, diligent, and deeply committed to her work and child. This marks the first time the community has witnessed such a tragedy, deepening the grief and disbelief among locals.

Her body was transported to the Pramso Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to be conducted under the supervision of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to her death and to uncover any potential underlying issues.

The management of Kokofu Government Hospital has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its staff members. In a statement, the hospital described Akosua as a compassionate and hardworking professional, and announced plans to provide psychological support to grieving colleagues.

The incident has reignited public discourse on mental health, particularly within the healthcare sector. Many are calling for enhanced support systems for health professionals, increased mental health education, and timely interventions to address the silent struggles many may endure.

Authorities and health advocates are urging national attention to the emotional toll on caregivers, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic change to safeguard mental well-being.
