An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 33-year-old woman, Latifa Iddrisu, into police custody for 14 days over the alleged theft of a baby from the Mamprobi Polyclinic. She is expected to reappear before the court on March 4, 2026.
The suspect is alleged to have stolen the baby on February 18, 2026. Reports indicate that she posed as a nurse and was captured on the facility’s CCTV cameras carrying the infant out of the premises in what appeared to be a sack. The footage later circulated widely on social media.
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the baby’s mother had delivered through a cesarean section on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, causing panic among staff and patients at the facility.
Police arrested Iddrisu, a cloth seller in Accra, on Wednesday, February 18, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was found with the baby.
She was subsequently transferred to the Mamprobi Polyclinic under the Dansoman Divisional Police Command for questioning and identification procedures.
According to police, the infant’s mother was invited to verify the child and identified the baby through a distinctive birthmark on the left leg.
The confirmation led to the safe reunion of the child with the family, bringing relief to the parents after the ordeal.
