Three people have been confirmed dead, with four others injured, after violent clashes erupted during the climax of the Homowo Festival at Sowutuom and Anyaa in the Greater Accra Region on Saturday, August 30.

According to a statement from the Accra Regional Police Command, the violence began during the sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the festival’s traditional ceremonial meal—when tensions between supporters of two rival chiefs escalated into gunfire, causing panic among festival-goers.

The unrest later spread to Olebu, where fleeing residents came under further attacks.

Police further confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries. While Enoch Amevor has since been treated and discharged, Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, also known as Nii Obrafour, are currently receiving treatment at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

In response, additional security personnel have been deployed to the affected communities, with intelligence-led operations underway to track and arrest the perpetrators.

The Accra Regional Police Command has urged traditional leaders and their supporters to adhere strictly to agreed security arrangements during festivals to avert further bloodshed and ensure public safety.

This year’s Homowo Festival, a major celebration of the Ga people, has now been marred by tragedy, once again highlighting the risks posed by unresolved chieftaincy disputes during public gatherings.
