The Ghana Education Service has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the assault of a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School during a district inter-schools athletics competition in Agona Swedru.

The incident reportedly involved students from the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) and occurred on Thursday, February 19, when tensions between the two schools escalated into a physical confrontation. The clash disrupted the sporting event and raised concerns about the safety of students, staff, and spectators.

The Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Juliette Dufie Otami, confirmed the arrests in an interview on Monday, February 23. She stated that police had made three arrests as of the previous day but noted that investigations were ongoing to determine whether all those arrested were students, as non-students could also have been involved.

Earlier, the Ghana Education Service (GES) expressed deep concern over the violence, emphasizing that such acts undermine the spirit of healthy competition and threaten the safety of participants.

In response to the incident, the Central Regional Directorate of GES has suspended all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools in the region pending a full investigation.

Authorities have assured the public that appropriate disciplinary and legal measures will be taken to ensure accountability and restore order to school sporting events.
