Inspector General of Police, Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has shared a startling personal encounter with a mobile money fraudster who unknowingly targeted him, an attempt that later led investigators straight to Nsawam Prison.
According to him, a fraudster, completely unaware of his identity called and attempted to trick him into dialing a code that could compromise his mobile money wallet.
“He spoke gently, gave me a code, and tried to lure me into dialing it. But I knew if I did, he’d get access to my password and empty my account,” Yohuno recounted.
Suspicious, the IGP confronted the caller, “Where are you? What do you do? I know where you are.”
Realizing he was caught, the scammer insulted him and cut the call. Tracing the number led straight to Nsawam Prison.
Yohuno also disclosed that a well-known Ghanaian rushed to his house in fear after receiving threats from unknown callers demanding $100,000 which was also traced back to Nsawam.
He added that inmates often use background sound effects, like sirens, to fake emergency situations and extort money.
“Some of these criminals are serving 15 to 18-years sentences and are still operating freely from prison. What more punishment can you give them?” Yohuno asked.
He urged Ghanaians to remain alert and immediately report suspicious calls to the police
