The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has excluded Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) newly nominated presidential candidate, due to discrepancies and illegalities discovered on his nomination form.
This decision was announced by EC Chair Jean Mensa during a press conference on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Mensa explained that while the GFP was initially allowed to address these issues, certain irregularities remained, making Kubi ineligible to participate in the upcoming election.
The GFP faced a significant challenge following the death of its founder and original presidential candidate, Akua Donkor, on October 15, which left the party without a representative for the December 2024 presidential election. The EC then provided a 10-day period for the GFP to nominate a new candidate, leading to Kubi’s selection.
However, upon reviewing Kubi’s documentation, the EC discovered irregularities that exceeded minor mistakes. Despite the GFP’s efforts to amend some errors, Jean Mensa stated that certain aspects were “illegitimate” under electoral regulations, ultimately prompting Kubi’s disqualification.
Mensa underscored that the EC is committed to preserving the integrity of the electoral process, which requires disqualifying any candidate whose documentation does not fully comply with the law, regardless of attempted corrections.
