Malcolm-Jamal Warner, widely recognized for his role as Theo Huxtable on the iconic sitcom The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54 after drowning while on vacation with his family in Costa Rica.
Local authorities confirmed that Warner was swept away by a strong ocean current while swimming at Playa Grande near the town of Cocles in Limón province around 2:00 PM local time on Sunday. Though bystanders managed to pull him ashore, attempts by the Costa Rican Red Cross to revive him were unsuccessful.
The Emmy-nominated actor was a household name in the 1980s and early 1990s, thanks to his role in The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992. He was handpicked by Bill Cosby after a nationwide search and went on to become a cultural icon for his portrayal of a relatable Black teen in a successful middle-class family.
Tributes have since flooded in from celebrities and fans alike. Jennifer Hudson, Taraji P. Henson, Magic Johnson, Jamie Foxx, and Tracee Ellis Ross were among the many who honored Warner for his warmth, talent, and impact. Fellow actor and comedian Eddie Griffin, who starred alongside him in Malcolm & Eddie, called him “My big little brother.”
Fox Entertainment, which aired Warner’s most recent show The Resident, described him as “extraordinary,” praising not only his acting but also his kindness and humanity.
Beyond acting, Warner was also an accomplished musician and spoken-word artist. He won a Grammy Award in 2015 and earned another nomination in 2023 for his album Hiding In Plain View. Last year, he launched a podcast titled Not All Hood, which focused on mental health in the Black community.
He is survived by his wife and daughter. Warner’s sudden death has left fans and peers heartbroken, with many remembering him not just as “Theo,” but as a multifaceted artist and kind soul who touched lives on and off the screen.
